In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we visited the only kosher farm in New Jersey that produces heritage poultry. This place is called Chosen Farms!
We met Yadidya and Miriam Greenberg. They were gracious hosts and took the time to explain the historical significance and qualities of various heritage breeds on the farm.
We saw the Bard Rock, New Hampshire, and Delaware chickens. Each breed is noted for its superior meat quality and natural living conditions at the New Jersey farm. These birds are allowed to roam freely both indoors and outdoors while living a healthy and happy life. The farm uses laying boxes to keep eggs clean.
These heritage breeds show a true return to the past, embodying Jewish chicken farming traditions in South Jersey from the early 1900s. We also went to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where we met Jake, an Amish farmer who raises heritage turkeys for Chosen Farms. These turkeys are free from the obesity and dwarfism mutations seen in commercial breeds, which makes them cherished as gourmet foods.
Chosen Farms is certified Standardbred by the American Poultry Association and also certified Glatt Kosher by the Orthodox Union (OU).
Through direct delivery across the United States, Chosen Farms makes it possible for kosher consumers to enjoy these high-quality poultry products. For this farm, it’s as much about preserving Jewish culinary traditions as it is about delivering superior flavor and health benefits.
