Educating our palate and learning something new about Ethiopian plant-based dishes.
Ras Plant Based is the hub of Ethiopian cuisine in New York City where community and culinary excellence come together. At this vibrant joint, the ethos of kindness and generosity are embodied through their service and plant-based dishes—which offer an authentic Ethiopian experience. The menu boasts a delightful array of dishes like mercato and piassa (which has steamed collard greens, chickpea puree, and red lentil stew), sambusas, and the bowl (which contains rice).
The mercato is spiced while piassa is a mild platter, they’re all served family-style on round platters. Our star is the injera, a spongy pancake that is the bread of a nation. It is fermented overnight or for a couple of days to get its uniquely sourdough texture and used as a utensil for enjoying the bowl, mercato, and piassa.
Our exploration of Ras showcases the intersection of Ethiopian and Jewish culture. This provides a fully inclusive dining experience even for kosher keepers. As the only Kosher-certified Ethiopian restaurant in the country, Ras Plant Based stands as an institution of vegan soul food from another part of the world. It also represents the convergence of flavors in a dazzling, finesse-driven environment.
